MELBOURNE -- The Australian High Commissioner in Malaysia, Miles Kupa, has asked that Lynas Corp be given a "fair go" as long as the rare earth mining company complied with local laws and requirements.
He said although Australia tried to support its companies, it had no part in their decision-making processes.
"But what we really ask is that they be treated fairly, objectively, that their plans are not disrupted by political factors, and indeed that they get a fair go ... so as long as they do respect the local regulatory requirements, and that's what we expect of Australian companies," Kupa told ABC Radio in an interview.
Kupa said he had often been asked why would Lynas wanted to send its raw material to Malaysia instead of processing it in Western Australia.
"I tell them this is of course Lynas' decision, it's their strategy to take the raw from Western Australia and process it in Malaysia for markets right around the world," he said. -- Bernama
