Universiti Malaya's (UM) entrance requirements will be more stringent from the September intake, said its vice-chancellor Tan Sri Dr Ghauth Jasmon.
Critical courses such as medicine, dentistry and such would require a maximum of cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.00 while arts courses needed 3.50, he said.
The decision was based on the autonomy status awarded by the government to several institutions of higher learning, including UM, he said after launching an art exhibition at the UM Art Gallery.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khalid Nordin had announced the awarding of autonomous powers covering governance, finance, human resource, academic management and student intake to five universities.
The universities are UM, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
