Jasin Bus and trailer Crashed

JASIN: An express bus driver and five passengers were injured when the vehicle crashed into a 37-tonne trailer at Km188.8 of the North-South Expressway, near Kampung Bemban, here, yesterday.


In the 4.45pm incident, the bus and trailer, which was loaded with oil palm fruits, were on their way from Kluang to Kuala Lumpur and Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah respectively. 
 
Jasin police chief, DSP Muhd Nur Hishamuddin Hashim said the bus driver, Hamdan Mohd Arif, 52, was seriously injured on the left leg which was trapped between the steering wheel and the back of the trailer for more than two hours. 
 
"Despite being trapped, the victim was conscious and he is now being treated at Melaka Hospital," he told reporters when contacted, here, today. 
 
He said three passengers, two women and a man aged between 22 and 25, sustained light injuries and treated at the same hospital, while the other two injured continued their journey to the federal capital on another bus.
 
The trailer driver, Mat Saad Hashim, 38, however, was unhurt, he said, adding that the cause of the accident was still being investigated. 
 
Meanwhile, Melaka Fire and Rescue senior superintendent Rasidi Md Yunos said the department managed to free the driver at about 7pm with 16 firemen from Jasin, Ayer Keroh and Bukit Katil. 
 
Mat Saad said the trailer was moving slowly on the left lane at the location when he heard a loud bang from the back.  -- BERNAMA
