The discovery of glittering stones in Jalan Mewah in Kg Melayu several days ago has prompted a “gold rush” among locals here.More than 100 people have been looking for the stones, with some coming as early as 6am. According to housewife Rohayah Dahlan, 55, who lives nearby, people started coming to the area three days ago.
“Initially, they told me they were looking for stones for their aquariums,” she said.
Fadilah Sabtu, 25, who works as security personnel at the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex in Bukit Chagar here, said he had been coming to Jalan Mewah for the last two days.
“My colleague told me about the gold’ that was found and since it is my off day, I decided to come here.
“I am looking for stones that are very shiny as there could be gold in them,” he said, adding that he had not decided whether to sell or keep the stones.
Johor Baru mayor Burhan Amin said he had asked his officers to ascertain whether the earth in the area, which was dumped two weeks ago by Johor Baru City Hall for a drainage and road-widening project, did indeed contain gold.
