Everyone knows that two of the candidates vying for the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) high performance director (HPD) post are former shuttlers Razif Sidek and Yap Kim Hock.
In fact, the two attended an interview yesterday to replace former badminton legend Datuk James Selvaraj, whose part-time appointment was discontinued after his contract ended last month.
But it is the identity of the other three candidates, which has been shrouded in secrecy, that has caught everyone’s attention.
Rumours have it that National Sports Institute’s (NSI) Wong Ah Jit and former shuttler Kwan Yoke Meng are in the mix. The BAM have confirmed that former doubles specialist Cheah Soon Kit is not one of the candidates.
The BAM revealed that 19 individuals had applied for the position but only five were shortlisted for the interview.
The first two candidates – Razif and Kim Hock – were interviewed yesterday and BAM secretary Ng Chin Chai acknowledged that there would be more interviews throughout the week and that they were looking to wrap things up after the Malaysian Open (Jan 10-15).
“It’s a really good sign that so many people applied for this position because it shows that there are a lot of people out there who are willing to contribute to the sport,” said Chin Chai.
“We have only shortlisted five according to the criteria that we’ve set and we’ll conduct the next few interviews within this week.
“I can’t reveal who the other three candidates are.
“After we’re done with the interviews, we’ll compile a report and send it to the BAM exco. Hopefully, we can conclude the appointment after the Malaysian Open.”
A five-man panel, including three BAM representatives – Chin Chai, general manager Kenny Goh and council member Chandra Jagadish – as well as NSI chief executive officer Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz and National Sports Council’s (NSC) Johari Abdul Wahab were present at Razif and Kim Hock’s interview.
