World number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei, who will spearhead Malaysia's challenge in the Thomas Cup, hopes to boost his team-mates' spirits before the Thomas/Uber Cup qualifiers in Macau next month.
"I am aware that this (Thomas Cup squad) is not the strongest...but being the most senior player in the team, I hope to lift the spirits of the players in the team.
"It does not matter whether we win or lose but playing with determination is important," he told reporters when launching his autobiography, Lee Chong Wei's Autobiography - Dare to be a Champion here Wednesday.
The autobiography, priced at RM35 (Chinese edition) and RM38 for the English edition, describes Chong Wei's career from the start to what he is today - World number one.
The event was attended by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and National Sports Council director-general Datuk Zolkples Embong.
The Thomas Cup squad led by Chong Wei includes Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, Liew Daren, Mohd Arif Abdul Latiff (singles), Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong; Goh Shem-Lim Khim Wah, and Hoon Thien How-Teo Kok Siang (doubles).
Asked whether his focus would be on the Thomas Cup or the 2012 London Olympics, Chong Wei said competition in this year's Thomas Cup would be stiff with the presence of China and South Korea.
"My personal goal is to win the Olympic gold but the Thomas Cup will still be top priority because it is a team event," said Chong Wei, who believes the Year of the Dragon year will be a prosperous one, given his brilliant start to the season, in which he has won the Korea Open and Malaysia Open in as many starts.
"This is a very important year to me...I hope I can maintain my performance for the first six months and remain injury-free. As for the autobiography, I hope it can inspire junior players in the country."
He added that winning the All England title for a third time in March was also among his major goals for 2012
